How To Monetize Your Email Lists

By: Kalynn Dresser   Date: September 4, 2017

Marketing is an important asset for businesses to make money, and it can take various forms, such as social media, traditional advertising, and online advertising. Another way is with email. Believe it or not, you can use your email lists to make money aside just from the basic advertising aspect. Really, you can, and this is particularly important for someone who doesn’t have a product or service they’re trying to promote, such as someone who runs a blog. How can someone like them monetize their emails lists? There are a variety tricks to making your email lists pay off for you, and they can work for those promoting products or not.

1. Affiliate
For those of you who aren’t trying to promote a product but run a blog, add affiliate marketing to your blog and chose products you readers would be interested in a review. Your email newsletter subscribers will visit your post, and hopefully be interested in purchasing the reviewed products so you will earn a commission.

2. Premium Content
If you run a blog, offer a paid membership to your subscribers for access to premium content. If your readers enjoy your content enough, they may be willing to pay for access to a premium site with exclusive content.

3. Ads
Places ads on your blog to promote other websites or products and get paid each time someone clicks an ad.

4. Niche Product
Develop quality products or services specific to your niche and market them. Better quality products will get you more money. This will work for any type of email list.

5. List Renting/Selling
You can make some money renting out or selling your email subscriber list, but it’s not really the best idea because you’re giving competitors the chance to target your audience with their own content.

6. Commission-Based Offers
Email your subscribers with a special discount or coupon related to what they’re interested in, and they’ll be appreciative of it. They’ll feel reward to their loyalty and you’ll get a commission for every offer that’s redeemed.

7. Trading/Sharing Lists
Trade or share your email list with similar niches. For example, a gaming blog’s list can be beneficial to a comic book one, and vice versa. Trading or sharing lists can be beneficial to both by expanding their target audience.

8. Smart Links
When sending out newsletters, be sure to include links to pages that make you most revenue and no more. You don’t want to overload your email with too many options and not enough revenue.

9. Autoresponders
Autoresponders are a handy tool. We use them often when we go on vacation, but they can be set to be sent out at any time, such as after a certain action. For example, you can send out an offer for an online course when someone visits a related post.

10. Social
It may seem obvious to use your email to promote your social media, but if you are on sites like YouTube or Instagram, that have monetization options and you have them set, be sure to use your emails to encourage visits to those sites.

11. Abandoned Carts
If you have an online store, you have probably experienced abandoned shopping carts at some point. Use your email to retarget those abandoned carts. Send out a friendly reminder, and maybe provided some small incentive offer, like a discount, to get them to come back and finish checking out.
