There’s no doubt that page speed is important. It can affect both sales and SEO. In today’s world, people tend to have an “I want it now” attitude about a lot of things, and that includes website pages. People love pages that load fast and get impatient when they don’t. That impatience can lead to them leaving the site without converting, which means they don’t buy anything. Thus sales are impacted as well as your website’s SEO.
Google’s ranking algorithm factors in site speed and page speed. A slow page speed can cause search engines to crawl fewer pages than allotted in their crawl budget, which can have a negative effect on your site’s indexing.
This is how it can impact your SEO on your basic online sites. But what about your mobile sites? If you’ve made sure to optimise your SEO for mobile devices that’s all well and good, but can your mobile page speed have a factor on your mobile SEO and mobile search rankings?
Mobile page speed is important, there’s no doubt about that. Just as page speed is important for your normal online website, it’s important for your mobile site and for the same reasons. People don’t like pages that load slow, and if they do then the person will be more inclined to leave and not wait, costing you much-desired conversions and sales. And in today’s world, a good portion of online sales are made on mobile devices.
So, yes, mobile page speed is important. But what about SEO? Is it an important factor to it? Not just yet. But it soon will be. Google has recently released new industry benchmarks for mobile page speed. One of them is about improving conversion rate and increasing profit since according to Google’s research, 40% of consumers will leave a page that takes longer than 3 seconds to load. Another benchmark is about customer retention. According to Google research, 79% of shoppers say they won’t purchase from a site again if they’re not happy with the site’s performance.
Google has used page speed as a ranking factor since 2010, but they now say that starting this year (2017) they will start using the speed of your mobile pages instead of your desktop pages to determine your mobile ranking.
So for now, it’s not that important for SEO. It may well be in the near future, but there’s no need to rush right now to try to fix it. Google usually makes an announce when they make changes, and they will probably make an announcement when mobile page speed does become a factor. In the meantime, you can put some effort into trying to increase your mobile page speed in the interest of bettering your bottom line and attracting better quality SEO traffic, but just don’t let your interest in the other proven SEO tactics slide whilst trying to better your mobile page speed.
